John Supports Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistance Act
Green Party Congressional Candidate John Miglietta Supports Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistance Act For Immediate Release August 11, 2010 Contact Information: John Miglietta Green Party Candidate US House of Representatives, 5th District TN 615 364-7150 johnmiglietta@gmail.com www.johnmiglietta.org “Tennessee doesn’t need a federal bailout, so why should Tennessee taxpayers be asked to bail out other states?” With this statement Representative Jim Cooper (D-TN) justified his vote against the Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistance Act yesterday August 10th. The aid package passed largely along partisan lines. Representative Cooper was one of only three Democrats who voted against it. It is estimated this bill will give Tennessee an additional 433 million in federal funds for Medicaid and Education. This would allow the state to rehire teachers and prevent further educator layoffs. This funding is very important for Tennessee as the state consistently ranks near the bottom in spending for education. Funding from this aid package will support much needed educational projects around the state. As a university professor John Miglietta understands firsthand the importance of making education a priority at all levels. A good education begins early with quality teachers and schools. It continues from kindergarten through college/university. John supports expanded funding for education at all levels. This includes a free public college/university education for qualified students. Making education a priority is essential, particularly in this economic environment to train a more competitive and technically sophisticated work force. This is especially true for providing greater opportunities for adult learners as more non-traditional students return to school for additional training, or an advanced degree. A significant amount of funding from the Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistance Act will support projects at Tennessee Board of Regents community colleges. Many of these students are often the first generation of their families to attend college. In addition to training a more competitive workforce education is important for its own sake. Having expanded educational opportunities allows people to appreciate the arts, literature, history, music, the sciences etc. Having an educated population enables citizens to make more informed decisions on issues and elections. John Miglietta (Green Party candidate for US House of Representatives) is looking forward to a spirited issue driven campaign for the 5th US House district in Tennessee. He looks forward to debating these issues with his fellow candidates, and to waging a vigorous campaign. John will be campaigning at the Tomato Art Festival in East Nashville August 14th.
